The Census of India has recently released the 2011 individual migration data. Although migration research is an age-old phenomenon in India, during the last decade the country has experienced a noticeable increase in human movement (314 million in the 2001 Census to 453 million in the 2011 Census). In India, out of the 1.21 billion population, nearly 453 million are migrants. The share of migrants to the total population in India is more than 37.4 percent.
